Why Do We Believe In A God We Cannot See

Why Should We Believe In A God We Cannot See

Soon after Jesus resurrected, He appeared to His disciples and instructed them to go out into the world with the good news that God had forgiven all the sins of men, and eternal life awaited all who would believe. On that day however, one of his disciples, Thomas, was not with them. Why Should We Believe In A God We Cannot See

When the other disciples told Thomas that the Lord was risen from the dead and had appeared to them, Thomas did not believe them. The story goes something like this:

“So the other disciples told him (Thomas), “We have seen the Lord!” But he said to them, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.” A week later his disciples were in the house again and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.” Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!” Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and have believed.” (John 20:25-29 NIV)

How Can We Believe In A God We Cannot See?

Many people have asked, “How can we believe in a God we cannot see?” Yet the Bible tells us that the existence of God is made plain throughout all of nature.

“For ever since the creation of the world His invisible nature and attributes, that is, His eternal power and divinity, have been made intelligible and clearly discernible in and through the things that have been made (His handiworks). So [men] are without excuse [altogether without any defense or justification, Because when they knew and recognized Him as God, they did not honor and glorify Him as God or give Him thanks. But instead they became futile and godless in their thinking [with vain imaginings, foolish reasoning, and stupid speculations] and their senseless minds were darkened.” (Romans 1:20 & 21 AMPLIFIED BIBLE)

When God appeared to mankind in the form of His Son Jesus,

(“God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself.” 2 Corinthians 5:19)

the world at large still did not accept or believe in Him. He healed terminally ill people, He even raised the dead on several occasions, yet they still refused to believe Him. What should God do than? Should He exercise His great might and power and appear to us like some Genie out of a lamp and fill the sky with His presence in order to get us to believe?

If men do not believe in God when everything around us testifies of His existence, than even if He appeared to them in the greatness of His might and power, they still wouldn’t believe; and those who did would do so out of fear of Him, not out of love for all that He has done to win us back to Him after our first parents elected to reject Him in favor of being their own gods.

And for all those in the scientific community who would try to get us to swallow that there is no God, (and ask how can we believe in a God we cannot see) but rather that we evolved out of a succession of cosmic accidents, the Bible has only one thing to say, in fact it says it twice:

“The fool hath said in his heart, “there is no God”.” (Psalms 14:1 & Psalms 53:1)

And if you are among those who prefer to align themselves with the idea that our existence came about as a result of time, evolution and a succession of cosmic accidents, consider this, even those in the scientific community who would have us believe this mindless tripe, admit that the odds that life came about as a result of a succession of cosmic accidents, are approximately the same as Webster’s Unabridged Dictionary coming into existence as a result of an explosion in a printing shop.
The Apostle Paul summed it up this way:

“We walk by faith, not by sight…”(2 Corinthians 5:7)

I produced a video to the classic song “Bridge Over Troubled Water” by Simon and Garfunkel. It reminds me of God’s love for us and always lifts my spirits-Enjoy and experience the love of God!
